Saturday False Alarm

it's here again. since thursday, i thought thursday and today was saturday. but i'll get it right tomorrow. haha! the weekend will be packed with backlogged work & meetings - the FLU has caused the most inconvenient delays. with work that needs to be done, i should feel compelled to hope for more hours in a day but i'm looking forward to the year's end that i don't wish for a day to last more than 24hrs.

the virus it seems, affected my mood (recall that lack of inspiration mention in my previous post) but i'm feeling way better now. how? Hawaiian Host! yes, chocolate and the most amazing macadamia nuts can rescue you from gloom. say aloha!

happy weekend =)

Most Wanted #6

florals in a mint julep, a personal pairing favourite

coloured crystal/glass, kinda into this now

gold/platinum rimmed china are all so charming, revere bowls are elegantly shaped too

i absolutely adore these bamboo motif-ed chairs, if i ever find one i'd re-paint and re-upholster them with a variety of materials. chinois prints, velvet, damask (i find this quite stale but what the heck), toile etc. possibilities are endless!

i saw this somewhere in a mall. but it wasn't green, orange. nice sleek and shiny finish no?

nice colour, nice asian floral print - it suits my face and skin color. unfortunately the price tag doesn't suit my wallet. haha!

An Excerpt

from mrbrown.com

We Only Want Approved Creativity

That was a long speech, and I will not be able to talk about all of it at one go. One bit stood out for me though, when PM Goh talked about The Creative Society.

While I agree with the need to have a creative society to attract the best to set up shop here, I am afraid it doesn't quite work that way, wanting to see a society where creative energy is only channelled to positive and non-idle pursuits. A truly creative society that buzzes and thrives is one where you accept not just the
Norio Ohgas, the Jack Neos, and the George Lucases, but also the public pubic hair snippers, the Catherine Lims, and the manglers of national songs.

Which society wouldn't want the artsy fartsy creatives and the high-tech geniuses? But the fringe types come with the territory. Some of them even express political dissent, have alternative sexual preferences, and consume contraband substances (I am not talking about chewing gum here).

And if Holland Village, Siglap, and Club Street are the best examples we can come up with as Little "Bohemias", we are in more trouble creatively than we think. Holland Village is this expat/yuppie hangout with overpriced food and bad parking, hardly a place of bohemians doing their creative stuff.

We replaced hawkers with food courts — witness the kind of food that exercise gave us. You cannot manufacture Food courts of Bohemia the way you plant instant trees along the ECP.You cannot buy creativity. You cannot spend a whole lot of money on two durians and say, look, we now have art and culture. Look, Singapore is now a Nexus for the Creative. Now we are truly like Sydney with their Opera House, and London with their National Gallery. Sorry, not even close.

Art and culture come from people, not from buildings. People like
Singapore's most famous potter, Iskandar Jalil, who was forced to dismantle his gas-powered kiln of 43 years, that he had been using to fire all his works. Because of a neighbour's complaint (ahem, public feedback), the SCDF told him to dismantle it as the three 50kg gas cylinders exceeded the home limit of 30kg. When you break the spirit of an artist, and make him cry, by hiding behind the convenience of public feedback and fire safety regulations, no amount of talk will convince the global creative community that your society welcomes them, no matter how many Esplanades or Little Bohemias you build. If you screw your own, what makes you think foreigners will believe you when you say you welcome foreign talent?
Peter Hartcher, commenting on the farcical Speaker's Corner, wrote that Singapore has the "emblems of a liberal democracy without its substance" and "has all the
mechanisms of a democracy without the liberal values which give them meaning".

We seem to be the same way with creativity. We are keen to acquire the emblems of a creative, artistic and culture-rich society without its substance, and we have all the mechanisms of a creative society without the values of free expression which give them meaning.

And in the end, all we have to show for it are architectural white elephants and psuedo-enclaves that echo with proclamations of art and culture, while the potter weeps over his broken kiln.

Various Updates

  • it's been a good week so far. those familiar with my sports fanaticism will know why!
  • had a very small (and pretty slack) birthday celebration for my mom. this is just the pre-celebration celebration cos i'm bringing her, my dad and sister out to dinner at a not so cheap restaurant. haha! bless my bank account pls.

  • i welcomed the first pack of cotton paper into my life =) its so lovely. those frays you see are the highest quality of cellulose fibre. Catiere Fabriano has been around for 700 years, trust them to make the best paper!

  • another product/service i'm offering. bespoke monogrammed correspondence cards from the royal series. comes in a range of papers to choose from =) below is a sample with my initials on them.

  • i'm drop dead tired. packed and labeled 500 sugar biscuits for a charity event. will post pics when i actually take a picture of what The Wedding Chateau did.
  • but since some beautiful individuals have brought much happiness into my life for the past 5 days, i continue smiling despite the aching backbone =)
i hope the weekend treats us all well!

It's Not Just Paper

only Italians can take paper and stationery (fashion, ice cream, cars, bikes, how to ride a bike i.e. Valentino Rossi - all included) to an art form!

i dropped by AF and FP today for some paper recee. if RJ wasn't terribly unaccessible via public transport - it would have been a destination too. anyhow i made a little discovery at AF. it's been some time since i've been there or perhaps i didn't notice but they bring in quite a number of Fabriano paper products. most on the stand are for office use i.e. DL envelopes or printing paper. tucked in the lowest shelf next to the Fabriano stand however were boxes of MEDIOEVALIS!!! oh my, high on euphoria i blurted out "Oh Fabriano!" and coincidentally there were two caucasian men browsing through some stuff next to me and one turned back. i would like to think it was his name really and not me being too idiotic!

alright so Medioevalis is their range of prized paper made from the highest quality of cellulose fibre. AF brought in 2 types of sizes according to the shelf labels but i only saw one which was C6-ish in size. and best of all, they brought in the Medioevalis stationery set which costs SGD191! i almost died, no actually i almost sat on the floor smiling at the entire shelf =)

downside, the packaging was kind of scrappy and raw looking (maybe they have been sitting there for 10 yrs?) unlike the ones i've seen online all clean and properly boxed up. but who cares - its Medioevalis inside!!!

oh and another thing, the AF staff told me Mediovalis was just watercolor paper. hello!? product research training please. they need to know more to sell paper at that price. then again, those who know it, don't need any convincing.

can someone bring in Hahnemühle, Magnani, G.Lalo now?! ;)

question: would you dare to splurge on paper for your wedding invitations?! most people aren't willing to spend because it ends up in the bin so they say. but i do know a family friend of ours who still keeps my sister's engagement & wedding memorabilia - invites, favours, place cards etc in his cupboard. it's been 7 years!

note: Asilah (i know you read this! haha, by any chance are you going to Milan or Rome? if you are do let me know i may need something from there! msg me on FB!)

First Syawal

first, i'd like to thank God for curing my gastric attacked stomach in time for me to eat all the delicious food sitting on my dining table this morning =) including my mommy's special curry prawns.

because of the coming exams, PSLE, finals, O levels, midterms, most people shortened their visiting hours this year i think! my house would still be full of relatives at 12am but we managed to close our gates and doors by 11pm instead, that's quite amazing!

anyhow - 2 sad stories to share. every raya eve, i'd go to my granduncle's house to collect this favourite kueh of mine. he passed away in december last year and it felt strange/sad not being able to do that anymore. while visiting his wife just now though, she actually passed me a box of that kueh i always collect yearly! okay, so it almost brought tears to my eyes as i recall my yearly raya eve visits. alright enough emo-ing. second story: my uncle's cat named stocking DIED. it was this huge/fat beautifully groomed persian. apparently someone stepped on it till its bladder came out. it was sent to the hospital but died eventually. ???!#@?? whoever that person is, i wish you a terrible life and a terrible death.

okay, not many pictures. i promise to take more tomorrow! to all my friends not in SG, actually only 2 la, hahaha, Selamat Hari Raya =) we will eat your rendang, lontong, sambal goreng, ayam percik portions for you. you can count on us!

i can smile because i can eat

my handsome grandfather, Hassan Dzuriat, if i can find this other picture of him, he actually looks like THE ROCK! hahaha!

with grandmama

a beautiful raya morning!

yummy curry prawns - loved every bit of this!

with the cousins and our feather fans! hahaha!
